Crystals for Shadow Work

Crystals for Shadow Work

It’s been a powerful year – release and regeneration have been the themes of 2018. In the process, many relationships, ways of being, communication styles, and other ingrained situations and habits have been considered, upended, and ultimately reformed or released entirely.

One consistency in all of this is that those things that have buried deep in our psyches have continued to come up in our lives – the stories, traumas, conditioning, worries, doubts, and secrets that we have tried so hard to push down keep rising for our examination. For those souls who haven’t been working continually to resolve lingering wounds, these issues are likely to have risen in an even more dramatic way, forcing heavy review. And as we prepare to head into Scorpio at the end of October, which rules the house of death and rebirth, those things that haven’t yet been addressed are likely to rise again for clearing.

How to deal? First, it’s remarkably important to address things head-on instead of pushing them down. Those facets of our being that we don’t like to acknowledge or express are collectively known as our “shadow,” and it’s essential with any self-love or spiritual practice to love all of ourselves, even the parts that we don’t normally rave about. The ultimate goal of “shadow work” is to bring those hidden pieces of ourselves into the light so that we can heal them and integrate them fully without shame.

But what if the memories, analysis, and healing get to be too much? Are there ways to alleviate some of the pressure or to cope? Absolutely. First, grounding is essential. If you don’t know much about grounding, here’s a link to a recent article that I wrote. Additionally, make sure that you’re getting adequate rest, drinking plenty of water, and eating nutritious foods so that you have the physical support to move past tough emotions and properly detoxify your body of the associated energy.

Next, pull out your crystals! As your shadow rises and forces your attention, work with the following crystals to uncover, illuminate, address, and shift the patterns and other issues that you need to heal. I also recommend carrying a grounding stone like black tourmaline or smoky quartz throughout this healing process.

Last Quarter Moon in Taurus

Last Quarter Moon in Taurus

Welcome to the Last Quarter Moon in Taurus! Though the lunar eclipse made things a bit tumultuous last week, Taurus offers a fresh perspective, new growth, and grounded ideas and action. An uber-practical Earth sign, Taurus inspires grounded planning, goal setting, and achievement, especially where those achievements will fulfill a higher purpose, result in long-term success, and satisfy Taurus’s craving for luxury on some level.

This luxury doesn’t need to be financial – Taurus is all about quality of life, so the ideas that come up should at a minimum provide you with a benefit like additional time with loved ones, space for yourself, or sustained comfort. Spend some time digging into these thoughts, probing them, and putting together an action plan to make them manifest into the physical. What’s your next step? How can you plan so that you’re continuously making progress? What background processes do you need to put into place before your idea can be executed smoothly? Write these out in a journal or planner if it will help you.

While you’re at it, use the energy of the waning moon to release any fears, worries, doubts, worthiness issues, or other issues holding you back from achieving your objectives. Taurus’s penchant for practical action is amazingly beneficial for this exercise, and if you focus, you can plan a whole lot and release a whole lot, paving the way for major change to come as you put things into play over the next few weeks and months. Once you’ve done this exercise, hold onto those goals – next week is both the new moon and another solar eclipse, so any ideas that you sort out now will receive an extra boost as you adopt them fully over the next week.

This year’s theme of change is still ongoing, but we’ve reached a point of faster progress now that the lunar eclipse has passed, and there should be far less to address from our pasts. Instead, focus on the new! Everything that we’ve shed this year is for our higher good, and this Taurus moon will help us to understand that on a deeper level. If the waning moon does bring some things up from your past, trust that it’s doing so in order for you to fully release them going forward. Observe whatever comes up, meld with it, learn the lesson, and let it go instead of pushing it down. Then you can move on with all of the amazing ideas that you’re creating.

For grounded and practical inspiration, organization, and planning, work with onyx, red jasper, smoky quartz, or dendritic agate.

New Moon + Solar Eclipse in Cancer

New Moon + Solar Eclipse in Cancer

Tonight’s new moon and solar eclipse in Cancer are destined to bring some heavy emotions to the surface. The New Moon is a time for intentions, goal setting, and deep inner work, and introspective Cancer can’t wait to participate.

A water sign that’s naturally ruled by the moon, Cancer rules the house of home and family, so settle in for some serious contemplation about – or discussion with – those nearest and dearest to you. To top things off, we just entered the shadow of Mercury retrograde, so communication may be a bit strained. Blame it on the stars and roll with the punches as well as you can – the energy is thick, but it’ll clear soon, and you can harness it to your benefit.

How to make the most of the Cancer moon and eclipse? Take advantage of the heavy energy and the extreme power in this moon to set strong intentions for your home and family life. Make sure to stay grounded with crystals, water, and root vegetables.

Journaling, yoga, meditation, exercise, and other self-care rituals provide wonderful options for the soul-searching energy cast by Cancer. Are you making plans for a family, buying a home, or improving communication with your partner? Write it out so that you can manifest it. Be as specific as possible when writing what you want – if you don’t ask for it, how will the Universe deliver?

While everything’s coming up, keep your energy and space clear by using an energetic purifier of some kind – selenite, incense, or a salt lamp would work, as would sound.

To ground yourself, inspire yourself, and balance your emotions during this potent new moon and eclipse, work with carnelian, tiger’s eye, ocean jasper (bottom left photo), or polychrome jasper (top right photo).
